Military Honor Roll

A veteran is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America,” for an amount of “up to and including my life.

The Knights of Columbus pays tribute to those who swore the following oath:

“I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.” 

As Catholics we know that scripture has counseled us ”not to swear at all” (Matthew 5:34) Christ meant, as the Fathers and ecclesiastical writers explain, to be so truthful that men could believe them without need of oath to confirm what they say. He did not forbid the use of oaths under proper conditions, when necessary to satisfy others of our truthfulness.

Knowing full well the weight of those words, these men honorably discharged their duties. Furthermore, although their enlistments and commissions have expired and were satisfied … the oath taken above has no expiration date.
